The Smartphone App Review - The Smartphone App Review - High Quality App Reviews for Smartphones and Tablets

By: Erin Konrad

Sick of playing the same old games on your phone? You can only sit through so many rounds of Candy Crush, right? Well, your new favorite game has just arrived! The Jump-AR app allows you to feel like you’re actually part of the action with an augmented reality (AR) experience. Instead of feeling like you’re just disconnected from the competition, Jump-AR will actually make you feel like you’ve stepped into the game!

The Jump-AR game is available on iOS platforms only and is totally free to download! After heading to the App Store, you can play the interactive game as you interact with KiKi & Friends to retrieve their stolen bananas. You just tap the screen to jump as high as you can, and you’ll be able to watch the blocks stack up so the characters can reach the top. The AR element allows you to see how high you’ve stacked your blocks in comparison to real-world objects in your actual environment. If you want to earn more bananas (or points), you can share things on Facebook or watch ads. All of the extra bananas will help you buy even more skins and ensure that the game continues.

You’ll feel even more invested in the game because you can compete to get the highest score among all other Jump-AR players. You’re even able to connect with friends, so you can bring a competitive nature to the game. There are also lots of different realms, characters, and competitions so you’ll stay interested in the ongoing story. The best part is that the cutting-edge AR technology gives you a learning environment with physical demonstration, so you’ll definitely feel like you’re part of the action. It’s okay if you’ve never used AR technology before. Jump-AR can help you feel more comfortable in no time!

As far as downsides, there are a few for this app. You might feel like you’re playing a kid’s game with the cartoon characters you use to play. Additionally, perhaps the biggest disadvantage is that you have to be mindful of where you’re trying to play the game. You always need to be in a well-lit area with textured surfaces (the AR engine is not able to recognize plain or shiny surfaces). This obstacle can make playing the game a little complicated and requires you to do some extra planning to think through whether your environment is compatible with the game or not.

If you want to feel like you’re truly inside a game, drop into the action with the Jump-AR app at the App Store!

The Smartphone App Review - The Smartphone App Review - High Quality App Reviews for Smartphones and Tablets

Einee is a learning app for kids that answers the question: what would it be like if I could talk to a famous historical figure? Now they can find out.

Here is some of the app’s description from the App Store:

Tease Einstein for failing at school, ask Donald Trump about the wall, or learn about Egypt from Cleopatra!

Talk to cartoon versions of famous real-life people. Einee is made to be goofy and fun. Learn about their childhood, life in their days, and get to know people you never could before.

The app opens with six people listed and the option asking to choose a chat buddy. It says chat because this learning app is built like a chat application. Instead of speaking to the character with their voice, the kids message them as they would to a person they were texting or chatting with.

Choosing Einstein’s cartoonish character to chat with, there are three pre-loaded questions to start with on the screen to ask him. Questions like, “Who are you?”, and “What is something you invented?” Einee will answer and also react to all of the questions. There are also some fun and silly animations and sounds when tapping on his face. The questions stay fun and geared toward a younger audience, but are also informative. Kids may not know that there were female rulers in Egypt, and Cleopatra is a great person to tell them all about it and much more.

Childrens’ school education introduces many kids to these type of figures, but mostly highlight what their main accomplishments are and don’t really dig into who they really were. This learning app is a great way for kids to reinforce their school education but feel more personable. The learning by playing always seems to be the best way for kids to absorb material, especially when it comes to history. It also shows their parents what they may be most interested in when they see which questions they select. Are they more curious about Einee’s hair or his theories?

Einee tries to go beyond the traditional educational app field by not just educating but also inspiring kids explains Ilya, the founder of Einee. “Most learning apps are so heavily focused on education that kids are repulsed. Which is why Einee is a play-first app meant to be fun and goofy. Education comes second, so that kids will naturally want to spend time with the app, unintentionally learning in the process. Einee is useful for inspiring kids, but also it helps them with their school education curriculum.”

I love free learning apps like this because they are what turns electronic devices into more than just entertainment machines. My five-year-old and I had a lot of fun playing Einee and we both learned something as well. Einee is a free app and Einee, or Einstein, comes free. Unlock others like Donald Trump, Leonardo Da Vinci and Napoleon for $0.99 each. I hope to see even more interesting characters pop up in the future. The app is available now for free in the App Store and is compatible with the iPhone and iPad. You can also get it on the Google Play store for Android.

Why You Need EaseUS Data Recovery Software In Your Life (Ad)
By: Erin Konrad

Ever experienced that horrible feeling when you realize you’ve lost some important file? It can feel like the world is ending. However, you never have to feel that terrifying panic again – if you download the free data recovery software from EaseUS, your files will always be protected. This easy to use program can protect any data you have, so read on for why you need this software in your life.

You want to use a safe process.

If you want to use a process that’s safe, consider that this simple recovery system works for your PC, laptop, server, memory card, or USB/flash drive. The EaseUS software uses a system that simply scans for the files you wish to recover and then easily retrieves them. The best part is that all of your data is still completely protected and safe during the process.

You want to recover data from multiple sources.

You can basically recover files from any number of sources, including documents, graphics, video, audio, email, or other archived data with EaseUS file recovery software. It also doesn’t matter which device you’d like to recover your files from, because the program can get back data from devices like smartphones, digital cameras, iPods, music and video players, and more.

You’ve lost data from different crises.

Worried that EaseUS can’t help with certain losses? Well, they can retrieve data no matter how you lost it. You can get back your files even if you lost them through sudden deletion, formatting error, hard drive failure or corruption, virus attacks (like ransomware or malware), partition or RAW loss, system crash, volume loss, improper operation, etc. Basically, no matter what crisis occurred, EaseUS has you covered.

You want an efficient scan.

You obviously don’t want to spend a ton of time getting your data back. So EaseUS lets you run basic quick scans or comprehensive deep scans to help you recover any lost or deleted files you need. The process is also made quicker because you can import or export your scan results whenever you need them.

You want to preview your results when you get them.

Another way to get a quick scan is to preview your data before you recover it completely. These scans let you look over the files you need to retrieve, so you can make sure you’re only selecting what you absolutely need.

If you’ve ever stressed about losing important files, make sure to download the free data recovery software from EaseUS so you never have to worry again!

Saboteur II: Avenging Angel iPhone Review

The Smartphone App Review - The Smartphone App Review - High Quality App Reviews for Smartphones and Tablets

Saboteur II: Avenging Angel is the iPhone and iPad version of a game that we recently reviewed for Android. Now available for iOS, Saboteur II: Avenging Angel does indeed share a lot with its Android brethren, so here are some quotes from my original review, all of which hold true for this version;

The new sections are huge compared to the original, and by several orders of magnitude. New story, told through Metal Gear-style radio chatter, new areas to explore and new puzzles to solve. It is a genuinely impressive thing to see; the developer could easily have released this as a third game in the series, but instead left it as a lovely surprise for returning fans.

New and remixed music is also here, and is a treat. In fact, the whole game stands up as a demonstration of just how these sort of things can be done. If more developers porting older games to mobile took the stance of not simply refining what is already there, but actually adding new and fresh content to decades old games, then the marketplace for such games would be a far more exciting place.

Saboteur II still holds up today as an interesting and fun adventure game, and the addition of new levels and ideas just takes it to another place. If you were a fan of these games in the 80’s, then this is a must buy, and I would still recommend this to anyone looking for a deeper and more thoughtful action game than you can usually find on mobile.

The ‘Avenging Angel’ of the title is Nina, the sister of the original game’s mysterious ‘Ninja’ character, which is interesting as Nina was one of the first ever female protagonists in a video game, released in 1987, the same year Nintendo introduced Samus Aran, another female lead, into the world of videogames.

Nina is set the task of sabotaging a nuclear missile by altering the course it is going to take. To do this she must traverse caves, bunkers and other environments, composed of single screens which are navigated from a side on perspective, and although this is more of a stealth puzzle game, there are some platforming elements to be found.

This extended cut of the original shares many of the bonuses from the Android version, including the excellent extra stages. New remixed music, the ability to choose different graphics and MFI controller support are all in, as is the extra addition of in-game achievements. This version is also free, with in-app purchases to unlock the full game.

Saboteur II: Avenging Angel is a superb updating of a classic game, and still deserves attention, both from long time fans and those looking for some fresh stealth based action.

The Smartphone App Review - The Smartphone App Review - High Quality App Reviews for Smartphones and Tablets

Manage all of your iOS devices without iTunes or an Apple ID with WinX MediaTrans.

iTunes alternative

No matter if you are ready to upgrade to the upcoming iPhone X or iPhone 8, or sick of paying for extra iCloud storage monthly, WinX MediaTrans is the one that understands your cross-platform media backup demand most. Without iTunes installed, it lets you backup and sync media content between iPhone/iPad and PC extensively or selectively – zero data loss.

Installing is easy. Just download from the homepage and run the installer. After starting the program, you are prompted to connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod. Unlike iTunes, WinX MediaTrans gives you adirect connection with your iDevice for faster and easier transferring of all of your data. The options on the starting menu break things down into simple categories. Photo Transfer, Music Manager, Video and Flash Drive.

Photo Transfer

The Photo Transfer will load all of your photos from the connected device, this can take a minute depending on how many photos there are. Images are organized into folders and you can select individual files or folders to export to a location of your choosing set in the settings area.

Music Manager

The Music Manager will instantly display all purchased music and playlists. Songs can be added to a playlist, edited (renamed), or exported. One really nice feature here is the ability to add any song to the device from your PC. This is great for adding ringtones, or any custom music. Just make sure you sync after any changes are made. Videos are organized into categories like TV shows, music videos, etc. Again you can add and export here as well. You can also set to auto convert into MP4 in the settings area.

Remove DRM

WinX MediaTrans also has an option to remove DRM from purchased music, movies, audio books, etc. The software will decode the encrypted media and save them DRM-free. Of course you should refer to copyright laws in your country before doing so.

Secret Flash Drive

One really unique ability is the Flash Drive. Add files or whole folders to your iPhone or iPad just as if it was any other hard drive connected to your PC. Drag and drop files into the area and sync. It’s as easy as that. Export, modify or delete in the Flash Drive area and manage files however you like. I like WinX MediaTrans and feel the design is easy to use and much more straight forward to understand than iTunes. It did take some time when syncing after changes, but not near as long as iTunes. This is definitely great for new iOS users who need to transfer media to a Windows PC.

Manage your music, videos and photos securely with WinX MediaTrans, your iTunes alternative. The software is available to download now from their website to try for free and is compatible with Windows operating system. A lifetime license is on sale now for only $29.95.

Layers of Fear: 3D Horror Game iPad Review

The Smartphone App Review - The Smartphone App Review - High Quality App Reviews for Smartphones and Tablets

Searching for a quality haunting on the App Store this Halloween? Well horror fans, you are in luck as Bloober has released Layers of Fear on iOS! Here is some of the app’s description from the App Store:

Delve deep into the mind of an insane painter and discover the secret of his madness, as you walk through a vast and constantly changing Victorian-era mansion. Uncover the visions, fears and horrors that entwine the painter and finish the masterpiece he has strived so long to create.

Game Features:
• Psychedelic horror – A sense of insanity means each turn of the camera may completely change the look of your surroundings.
• Victorian setting – Explore a game world inspired by masterpiece paintings, architecture and décor from the 19th century.
• Original and classic art – Numerous pieces of original art and music flesh out the story and environment.
• Story-focused exploration – Only through exploring the environment can you uncover the details of the painter’s dark and tragic past.

Layers of Fear: 3D Horror Game is the iOS build of the original game released in 2016. Revered for its haunting design and story-driven gameplay, Layers of Fear is more of a horror experience than anything else. A first-person exploration into a mad painter’s mind, every corner turned in this 19th-century setting proves that not everything is what it seems as you uncover more of its dark story.

The app opens with an epilepsy warning and recommendation to use headphones for an optimal experience. A calibration screen lets you set the brightness of the game for the best visual and spooky atmosphere. On-screen instruction shows how to play for mobile. No mouse or keyboard here so movement is made with a Virtual Gamepad joystick while swiping allows you to look around. Items highlighted with white dots can be interacted with, such as opening doors or picking up items. There is a multitude of things to touch and see, but just because it’s marked does not mean it is an interaction that moves the story forward. The sound design with headphones makes every sound especially creepy, especially your own footsteps and the thunderstorm and flashing lightning really set the mood.

Roaming room to room, the atmosphere only gets more and more chilling. Though it seems as if it is just you and the empty house, there are sudden sounds, movements of doors and paintings until the old house is a giant maze. The explorative nature makes every turn unsettling as the pursuit of clues and puzzles unraveling the story keeps you moving forward.

Playing on my iPad, the visuals filled the whole screen and playing on a mobile platform seemed very natural. That being said, the controls are a little wonky. Moving closer to objects to get a better look took a little finesse and practice. At first, I easily got stuck walking into walls. Some items were harder to touch and interact with, especially if I wasn’t viewing it from just the right perspective. Those little issues aside, there is never a dull moment in this game. No matter how bizarre things get, it’s not enough to scare you off entirely from finishing it.

Layers of Fear: 3D Horror Game transitions perfectly to mobile devices and is just as thrilling to play as it was on console. The app is available now for $9.99 in the App Store.

The Smartphone App Review - The Smartphone App Review - High Quality App Reviews for Smartphones and Tablets

This year during the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, many families have been put in the position of estate planning as loved ones are at risk of, or have fallen victim to the virus. What some do not realize is that wills and living trusts are only part of the requirements. EZ Estate: Your Final Affairs is an app that helps users iron out all of the messy estate details their survivors will need to deal with after they are gone. Here is some of the app’s description from the App Store:

EZ Estate is an all-inclusive app to help you prepare your final affairs. Estate planning, wills & trusts, funeral planning, and bill organization – now all in one place. Record complete information and instructions for your family after your death, because preparing for tomorrow starts today.

Someday, the sun is going to set for all of us. The question is, are you going to set up your family as best you can before you go?

Do your family members know where you keep your important documents? Life insurance, will, payment booklets, passwords, retirement papers, and everything in between. These are a necessity to take care of things when you’ve passed. Without them, what happens to your money and estate?

In over 80% of families, one person is responsible for managing all the finances and paying bills. If this is you and you pass, what happens then? Who knows what bills need to be paid and when? Don’t leave anything to chance.

Estate planning is a stressful job juggling all of your documents: retirement benefits, bills and payments, both on paper and digitally on the computer. Using EZ Estate, you can easily log & share your financial information, and make sure your family knows how to find every important document.

Plan your funeral, state your special requests, and be confident that your family will know exactly what you want and follow through. EZ Estate lets you plan every detail.

Getting started is simple as EZ Estate has a variety of login options available, including creating an account with an email address and password or logging in with an existing Google, Apple, or Microsoft account. Face ID can be toggled on as well which is also nice. Signing up, users must acknowledge that the application is for documentation and information storage purposes only and not meant to replace any legal advice nor is it legally binding. Next, create a passcode to secure the data and encrypt it. Any heirs needing access to the information in the user’s EZ Estate account will need this passcode.

The app organizes everything clearly by category and subcategory (such as Important Contacts: accountants, attorneys, clergy, etc.). Categories include: “My Financials,” “My Important Contacts,” “My Personal Documents,” “Miscellaneous,” “Gifts & Personal Property,” “Pets,” and “My Funeral.”  It uses a clear spoken audio interface to guide the user through the setup for ease of use, and the user information can be entered by typing or recorded directly via video. These are very thoughtful touches to be included and can really make all the difference in an app like this.

EZ Estate comes with a 15-day preview, then users can choose to purchase a one month license for $4.99 or a one-year subscription for $49.99. This includes service access and information storage. The cost is not too extravagant. This is a full-service app that seems to cover all the bases for estate planning, but to be clear, it is more of an organized template than anything. There truly is no legal applications or will software, this is simply a place to store directions on where those documents are kept and directions on what to do during the funeral, etc.

EZ Estate: Your Final Affairs is a simple and organized solution to an extraordinary problem. It is available now for free on the App Store. It is also available for Android users on the Google Play store.
